One of my earliest jobs in retail was at The Disney Store. I was a part-time cast member in a pretty busy location and worked for a bi-polar nightmare. One day I was her "favorite, don't tell anybody" and the next day she was crying in the stockroom and hated me and everyone else in the world. Ugh. At least I was really young and could just let the crazy stuff roll right off. The early 90's setup of those stores included a large display of plush characters (known as "Plush Mountain") beneath a movie screen that continually looped clips of upcoming movies, classic cartoons, animated feature highlights and theme park advertisements. It wasn't uncommon to see toddlers parked on the floor, cross-legged and fully engrossed in the film clips while their moms shopped. After all, that was the whole idea in the first place.
However, one day I was passing through and noticed a mom on the floor with her child, breastfeeding with no blanket for cover in the big, wide open hub of the store. Not the most common sight. What struck me about it was not that she was in the act of breastfeeding but that she was breastfeeding a standing child at least 4 years of age. I was shocked. The entire staff was shocked. The guests were shocked. It's not like anyone could say anything but, seriously, when was the last time you saw a dressed child in public who could form complete sentences, taking a dose of mother's milk?
I'm not standing in judgment against those in the La Leche League but honestly, the eww factor was really high there. I agree that you have the right to raise and care for your children the way you deem best but it's been over 16 years and the former cast members that I'm still in touch with always bring this story up when we reminisce. Eww.
